Before you put another project into your full-spectrum-laser, take two minutes. I'm a quality/compliance manager at a laser equipment company, and I review roughly 200 unique jobs a year—engraved prototypes, production batches, and customer-ready pieces. Last year, about 12% of first-run samples failed because of preventable material or focus issues. From my desk, the difference between a saleable engraving and scrap is rarely the laser's brand. I learned this the hard way: I once skipped a material test because two acrylic samples were both labeled 'black cast.' One engraved beautifully; the other melted at the edges. That batch had to be redone. Now I run a 5x5 grid at five speeds and five powers on a fresh piece before I commit. Look up actual postage before you post your price. If your engraved business card or thin metal tag fits within USPS flat-size rules, that's a useful baseline. My rule: include shipping, packaging, and a 5% scrap allowance in every product price. If the failure rate is high because you're still dialing in settings, that 5% isn't enough—but it's a start.

7. What's the thing sellers overlook before listing engraved items?

The difference between an engraving product and a claim. If you say your metal tag is 'stainless' but the blank is only coated, you're setting up a bad review and, potentially, an FTC problem. Per FTC business guidance (ftc.gov), advertising claims must be truthful and substantiated; 'food safe,' 'rust proof,' and 'stainless steel' are the types of words I watch for.

The most frustrating part of QC isn't the big failures. It's the tiny residue or crooked second line that a customer notices after 200 units are packed. You'd think the proof would catch it, but if no one marks the proof carefully, it becomes your cost.
